The new model is aimed at the core of the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) market and will replace the current Land Cruiser Colorado model. The new car will be known as the Toyota Land Cruiser. The larger Land Cruiser Amazon model continues with a revised interior and enhanced level of standard equipment.
Like all previous Land Cruiser models, the new Toyota Land Cruiser offers full off-road capability but, in response to the growing demands of customers, the latest model offers superb on-road driving pleasure with premium standards of quality and comfort.
After 51 years of tackling and conquering some of the toughest terrains around the globe, Land Cruiser has come to symbolise Toyota's legendary strengths of reliability, durability and build quality.
The new Toyota Land Cruiser is set to take its place as a worthy successor to the generations which have gone before. More than four million Land Cruisers have been sold worldwide with over 200,000 customers in Europe alone. Current UK sales for the outgoing Colorado model are around 1,300 units per year and the new model is expected to double that in time.
The new Land Cruiser retains the legendary reliability and durability and adds perceptibly higher quality interior, driving pleasure, stylish design and premium levels of equipment and innovation.
It is equally at home on and off-road, yet, the new Toyota Land Cruiser is no 'soft' Sports Utility. It retains the traditional 4x4 frame chassis and separate body construction for maximum rigidity and strength.
THE MOST POWERFUL LAND CRUISER EVER
The new Toyota Land Cruiser will be available in either three or five-door bodystyles with a choice of petrol or diesel engines.
The 3.0-litre, D-4D common rail turbo diesel already among the most powerful and torquey in the sector is carried over from the present model range and offers enormous torque with excellent fuel consumption. The engine develops 120kW (163DIN hp) at 3,400rpm with torque of 343Nm across an engine speed range of 1,600 to 3,200rpm. Maximum speed is 103mph (165km/h) with manual transmission and acceleration from 0-62mph in 13.0 seconds.
The all-new 4.0-litre, V6 petrol engine, available early in 2003, is the most powerful six-cylinder petrol powerplant in the class and gives the new Land Cruiser premium passenger car performance with a top speed of 112mph (180 km/h) and 0-62mph acceleration in 9.5 seconds. This lightweight alloy V6 develops 183kW (249DIN hp) at 5,200rpm and has 382Nm of torque at 3,200rpm. This is also the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Land Cruiser.
The new Toyota Land Cruiser has permanent four-wheel drive with high and low ratios controlled through the transfer gearbox. A new Torsen limited-slip centre differential ensures excellent driving characteristics.
Toyota's semi-active suspension (TEMS Toyota Electronically Modulated Suspension) is available as standard on the top of the range five-door model, offering even greater ride comfort over bumpy roads. Rear air suspension is also available it replaces the conventional suspension springs by rubber bellows filled with compressed air. This suspension has an automatic levelling feature and allows the ride height to be adjusted at the push of a button.
DESIGNED IN EUROPE
The contemporary exterior styling of the new Toyota Land Cruiser was created in Europe at ED
2, Toyota's advanced design facility in the south of France. It is the third Toyota with styling led in Europe (after Toyota Yaris and new Toyota Corolla) and reflects the growing confidence and global creativity now developing at ED2.
The initial concept set out to be a 'contemporary evolution' of the traditional toughness and power of the Land Cruiser brand. The latest Toyota Land Cruiser is clearly new, yet it still manages to retain the identity of the previous Land Cruiser Colorado.
The overall rugged appeal of the new Toyota Land Cruiser is reflected in the interior design, which combines functionality with the quality of a premium passenger car.
PREMIUM SECTOR QUALITY
The new Toyota Land Cruiser will introduce new levels of quality to the core SUV market this is not just quality in the traditional Toyota sense of robustness, but also perceived quality in the look, touch and feel of the interior.
High quality seating and interior trim is used throughout with a choice of two interior colour schemes, luxurious ivory or sporty grey. Leather seating with a new soft finish is available on the top of the range five-door models.
A class-leading safety package to ensure maximum occupant protection is available. Two-stage driver and front passenger SRS airbags with SRS side airbags and SRS curtain shield airbags are available as standard across all grades on Land Cruiser.
For superior braking capacity, all models are fitted with ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) and BA (Brake Assist). TRC (Traction Control) and VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) are standard on the top of the range five-door models.
The comprehensive equipment list includes luxury items such as:
• Electric power seats and seat heaters
• Full dual zone climate control
• Cruise control
• Optitron instrument illumination
• Turn-by-turn satellite navigation with ETA (Electronic Traffic Avoidance)
• Full map DVD based satellite navigation system with EMV screen
(availability of the above varies according to model grade)
PACKED WITH INNOVATION
The new Toyota Land Cruiser is packed with advanced technology to offer the driver complete control under all driving conditions and enhance occupant comfort and safety.
The new Toyota Land Cruiser is the first vehicle in the world to be fitted with Hill-start Assist Control (HAC). On ascents, HAC detects any backward slippage and slightly applies a braking force to slow down the vehicle, hence reducing slippage, regaining forward momentum and assisting the driver for starting. HAC will be available on all top of the range five-door models.
A second function is the class leading Downhill Assist Control a brake control system which works automatically on the wheels to control speed and prevent the vehicle from slipping down the hill out of control. The Toyota DAC is more precise and offers better control than other existing systems on the market today, thanks to its individual control of the wheels' speed.
WORLD DEBUT AT PARIS MOTOR SHOW 2002
With a world debut in Paris, the new Toyota Land Cruiser will go on sale in the UK from January 2003 for the 3.0-litre D-4D versions. The new 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine versions will be available in March. Prices and specification will be announced later this year.
