Your guide to buying a 4x4
(Click here for essential things to consider)
A 4x4 vehicle simply means that the engine drives all four wheels (as opposed to the conventional front or rear two wheel drive cars). The theory is that the car has better traction, as engine power is spread evenly across the axles. In reality, four wheel drive has improved safety and performance, but are heavy and expensive.
The 4x4 was originally developed to improve traction off-road, but today drivers want full on road capability with good off road capability.
Performance
Speed and acceleration of many 4x4's are good and comparable to many two wheel drive cars. Diesels have plenty of pulling power at low revs making them ideal for towing.
Fuel economy varies significantly between models, due to engine size and weight, as well as how it is driven.
Ride & Handling
4x4's have softer and longer travel in the suspension, creating greater body roll, but enabling the occupants and vehicle to have a smooth ride over rough terrain.
In many cases the steering will feel vague, as the steering column is designed to absorb the shock of the rough terrain under wheel, making the drivers experience more comfortable.
Seating
The first thing that strikes many people when they initially sit in a 4x4, is the height and seating position. In the larger models it can be like sitting in your armchair at home but off the ground.
CONSIDER !
- how many passengers do you regularly transport ? Nearly all 4x4's claim to carry the driver plus three passengers, but the space varies significantly between makes & models.
- is access suitable for your passengers ? (Note the higher wheel base and protrusion of the rear wheel arch in rear door entrance).
- if you have small children, can you easily access the child seat ?
Luggage & Storage Space
In a number of models, luggage space has been compromised to create more room for passengers. Be aware that in some instances you may find that you only have room for a pair of Wellingtons and not enough for your weekend luggage.
However, additional space can usually be obtained by folding the rear seats forward or splitting the rear seat 60/40.
Rear access to the boot is good on most models as entry is via a large door or tailgate.
Quality & reliability
The mechanical build quality on 4x4's is generally good, and parts are often made to a high specification for greater robustness.
The interior aesthetics however, vary in quality and appearance.
Equipment
As all cars, standard and optional extras on 4X4 models vary significantly, from very basic to simply luxurious.
Safety & security
CAUTION! Rapid changes of direction at speed can cause instability of 4x4's. (This is due to the higher centre of gravity, greater body roll and weight). In some instances this may result in loss of control or worse still, roll over.
TIP !
In spite of the large size of 4x4's, as with other cars, look out for :-
- driver and front passenger airbags
- side airbags
- anti-lock brakes.
TIP !
Check for adequate prevention measures, such as immobiliser, deadlocks on doors and a car alarm is fitted. 4x4's are very desirable vehicles and feature highly on stolen vehicle lists.
Rough Price Guide
Prices of 4x4's vary enormously depending upon available options, build quality and brand image.
At the entry level a new 4x4 can be purchased from £9,000, increasing to in excess of £60,000 for the top of the range luxury models with full leather and satellite navigation.
